The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende
This saga tells the story of three generations and it really captivates you from the first page unitl the last. It’s one of the most beloved Latin American works of the twentieth century and includes both happiness, triumph and sorrow. It’s about the patriarch Esteban and his intense love for his wife Clara, who seems to have a magical aura around her. It’s about their daughter, Blanca, who loves a man that her father depsises and deems as unworthy and it’s about Alba, the ambitious granddaugher who will lead the family and their country into a future of revolution and uprise. It’s a lovely novel about magic, love and fate and a must read for everyone.
1984 by George Orwell
Set in Airstrip One (formerly known as Great Britain), a province of the superstate Oceania in a world of perpetual war, governmental surveillance and public manipulation, under the control of a privileged elite of the Inner Party, that persecutes individualism and independent thinking as “thoughtcrime”. The scary tyranny is overlooked by Big Brother, the party leader who may or may not exist. This dystopian novel, written during the post war time in 1948, is both hunting and thrilling and creates an imaginary world that is completely and scarely convincing. This is a true classic and if you haven’t read it, we highly recommend you to do so.
