Our modern lifestyle is far from an active one. Just think about how much time you spend sitting down each day, either working, surfing the web or watching TV. Physical activity have endless health benefits and is not restricted to exercise only performed at the gym. We give you five simple ways on how to become more active in your daily life.
Fun fact: One of the easiest ways to improve your health is through increasing the amount of low intensity activities performed throughout the day.
Embrace the stairs
Yes, you heard us: Stairs equals friend! Remember that. Take the stairs every chance you get. It’s actually as simple as it sounds, and if you lack motivation: just think about what such a simple act can do for your long term health. Worst case you can start by walking and take the elevator the rest, if you feel like giving up on the way. However, you can do this!
Stand at work
We can’t emphasize enough the importance of standing up during the day. Recent studies show that sitting for long periods of time has a negative effect on our overall health. If possible, stand up, and if not take a short break and take a walk to the kitchen or do some simple stretching exercises by your desk. Not only is it good for your health, but your energy level will rise! Read more about the importance of moving at work here.
Nothing is more comfortable then diving into the sofa after a long day at work, but we recommend you to go for a walk instead. A little fresh air never hurt nobody. Or instead of meeting an old friend over coffee, why not share your stories over a walk in the park? Or instead of joining the big crowd of stressed people on the subway, why not walk home from school or work? And vary the route to keep things interesting. If you find walking boring and don’t have a walking buddy we recommend some music or audio books. Make it a fun thing instead of a boring chore.
Switch from inactive to active
Many of us usually have a certain time of the day we like to be inactive and watch TV or scroll through the web. Why not try to choose that time to do something active for around 20 minutes instead. Turn that bad habit around. We don’t mean you should run to the gym, we mean the small stuff. Do some cleaning, play with your pet or children or do some gardening. Whatever keeps your body active for a few minutes! And remember, 20 minutes is nothing, you will still have time to relax and watch TV.
Trade drinking for dancing
Boys, we know this one hurts! But dancing is way more fun than sitting in a dark bar drinking and the ladies (and your health) will love you for it! If you don’t like to dance in public then have a dance off at home. Just turn up the volume and start shaking off.
