Many spend countless hours at the gym, toning their abs, getting ready for bikini season. However, your abs actually exist for more reasons than looking good!
The core is a complex series of muscles based in your mid-section, including your abdominal muscles (front, side, and deep) low-mid back muscles and all of the hip muscles (glutes, hip flexors, pelvic floor muscles). They provide a muscular frame that protects internal organs, aid movement, and lends balance and stability to the whole body. It’s actually the base of your body’s strength and by developing a solid core, it will increase not only your body’s strength, but also your health.
There is a huge amount of core exercises to choose from, so don’t worry if you hate the plank or regular sit ups. And best of all, you don’t need any fancy machines or endless hours at the gym to target your inner belly muscles. All you need is a mat and ten minutes.
We share our favorite workout to help strengthen our midsections below. While doing the exercises, focus on tightening your transversus abdominis, the deepest abdominal muscle and the one you feel contracting when you cough. Take deep breaths and just go for it!
