A holistic connection between mind and body

Do you have that friend who seemingly has it all: a brilliant career, a wonderful family and a fit body? What most people don’t realize is, she too struggles with her own demons.

As much as we’d all love for a healthy life to be a sum of healthy habits, such as eating well, exercising, and sleeping, we are much more complex beings than that. We are a sum of our thoughts, perceptions, and feelings, just as much as our daily choices and actions.

So, it’s no wonder that low self-esteem has the power to affect your immune system, as research has shown that for example people who struggle with self-blame at work experience drops in their immunity more frequently than those who are confident. This is merely one part of an intricate equation of life, and we are only scratching the surface of how our emotional wellbeing affects our mind, as well as how our physical vitality impacts our mental state.

Be happy to live longer
Let’s consider this “chicken or the egg” conundrum: do you believe that you need to be healthy in order to be happy, or the other way around? Apparently, thinking positive thoughts has been linked to increased life longevity, even for patients with heart disease.

However, if you need to start somewhere, start with the things you can control with ease. Think about what makes you happy and do it more often! It can be exercise, which is known to boost your happy hormones, but it can also be something like enjoying a funny book. Just stick to what makes you smile, laugh out loud, and detox from daily stress!

Balanced nutrition for all-around resilience
We’re often told that the quality of our meals shapes our physical resilience, but what about our mental fortitude? This is where the famous expression “trusting your gut feeling” gains a whole new level of meaning, because studies have shown that a healthy gut flora is a key ingredient in our emotional stability and mental health.

The right foods give us the right amount of energy, they balance our hormones, and protect our bodies from harmful microbes. Sources of essential macro and micronutrients are crucial for gut balance, so ingredients such as anti-inflammatory Manuka Oil, antioxidant-packed Matcha tea, and the protein-rich Spirulina should reign supreme on your menu.

It takes time to master the art of listening to our body and recognizing our needs.

Mindfulness for prevention
More people join the mindfulness movement every day, and due to this simple practice’s incredible potential to soothe the mind and heal the body, it has become one of the pillars of health. It may start as a meditation practice and breathing exercises, but mindfulness reflects a permanent mindset anchored in the present moment, embracing its beauty, and letting go of all the things we cannot change.

When you incorporate mindful meditation into your life, science has shown that it helps alleviate the impact of stress by controlling our inflammatory responses. There are even studies that aim to explore how mindfulness can help us regulate our emotional responses and how this may help reduce the risk of brain degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s or help those who already suffer from it.

The art of listening 
The entire story of how our physical, cognitive, and emotional behaviour is intertwined is based upon the premise that we have the ability to recognize our own needs. However, our internal signals often get crossed, so what sounds to us like hunger may in fact be boredom, so we end up stress-eating.

It takes time to master the art of listening to our body and recognizing our needs. Some of the best actions in life may not feel as pleasant from the get-go, such as starting an exercise regime, or a challenging job, but it is precisely these choices that will end up shaping our existence both inside and out. The beauty of it all? Most of what happens in your body and your mind is in your hands. Perhaps it’s time to embrace the responsibility and start listening to our internal voice!

A journey to take back her power

Having dealt with several different autoimmune diseases and finding no cure, Helena Önneby took matters into her own hands. On her journey to take back power over her own life she learned to take full responsibility for her health: body, mind and soul.  Which all led to her publishing the book: Pure Personal Power. 

What inspired you to write this book?
I first got inspired to write this book at the age of 13, after having been really sick for a longer period for the first time. I wanted to write a book about my experience to be able to help others in a similar situation feel less lonely. Later on, when I found a way to heal from the root of the problem, I started blogging about my journey. When I quit my corporate job last summer I finally got the time to write a proper book about it and the tools that I want to share with others.

The book is partly about your journey healing from different autoimmune diseases. Tell us a little about that.
For more than 15 years I trusted my doctors above all else and never listened to my own body’s wisdom or what actually made sense. About six years ago I was really sick and had collected six different diagnosis over the years. The doctors started calling me “autoimmune” and I realized there was a link between all of the different diagnosis and wanted to know more. When no one in conventional medicine could answer my questions, I found my own path in functional medicine. So often we shut off the fire alarms (the symptoms) instead of extinguishing the fire (the root cause of the disease). In functional medicine you do just that, find the root cause and start the healing from there.

How would you say this has affected you and this book?
What started as a physical healing journey soon turned in to something much bigger than that. I realized I had to work on my self-worth, dealing with fear and stress, and start focusing on identifying with what was healthy in me and being grateful for that.

What do you hope to achieve with your book?
I hope this book will be what I so desperately needed when I had lost all my power; being caught in victimhood and trusting everyone else but myself. I want it to be a guide for anyone who has lost the power over their life.

Personal power is authentic power. It’s the source of your strength!

What is true personal power to you?
Personal power is authentic power. It’s the source of your strength and you can tap it once you start taking responsibility for your life and everything in it. It lives within all of us and it’s when we live in our power that we can create the life that we truly want and the world that we want to live in.

How do you help others on their journey to find true personal power?
Today I guide people to find their power by coaching, mentoring, teaching and writing. I’m on a mission to help people live up to more of their potential by living a more authentic life.

How does self-love and personal power connect?
When we love ourselves we also believe we are worthy. If we don’t believe we are worthy we will always resist our power and block our own self-expression. You are worth living the life of your dreams!

What is true health to you?
True health is holistic health. It’s about body, mind and soul. They are all intertwined, and they need to balance for us to find true health. There is no one size fits all or quick fix, it’s a life long journey of trusting, listening and adjusting when we need too.
