Let´s get moving

We have all heard it a hundred times before; physical activity equals better health. In fact, there is no way around it if you want to improve your overall well-being and quality of life. Time to put that to a test!

It is said that to reduced risk of health problems and maintain an overall good health, a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate to high intensity physical activity is required each day. In fact, the list of benefits is endless, and you would think that knowing this would make most of us jump out of the couch. But the sad truth is that only 1 out of 3 meets WHOs (World Health Organization) minimum recommendations and many of today’s major public health problems are related to our lifestyle and lack of movement. Time to change that, don’t you think?

All you need to do is make a conscious decision to get moving.

I for one want to be healthy, happy and be filled with endless energy, so I decided it was time to put it to a test. So, I am adding at least 30 minutes of physical activity into my daily routine for the next two months and will see what happens. And I of course want you with me on my journey.

But before we start, let’s first look into what moderate and high intensity physical activity means:

  • Moderate intensity corresponds to activities that result in faster breathing than usual, such as power walking.
  • High intensity is equivalent to activities that result in much faster breathing than usual, such as running.
  • In addition, WHO advises doing strength-training exercise twice a week, working all the major muscle groups. Strength exercises should be adapted to the individual with regard to type of exercises, number of sets, number of repetitions and frequency of training.

So, let´s do this! And remember, there is not need to run to the gym! A walk in fresh air, a swim, playing with your children, a dance off in the living room; everything counts as movement. Keep it simply my friends, no need to complicate things. You just need to find what gets you moving!

From couch potato to a more energized self

We have all heard it a hundred times; moving more equals better health. You get more productive at work, you sleep better and you feel more energized and happy. But then there is the hard truth that getting up from the couch is easier said than done. And the gym frightens many of us.  

The good news is that the benefits of physical activity are not restricted to exercise performed only in the gym. There are other steps you can take to increase physical activity that don’t involve hours lifting weights or running on a treadmill.

Simply be on the lookout for little ways to move more.

The small things that can increase your everyday exercise. And you just wait and see; it will do wonders to your overall health!

Use your legs
Get up and start walking. It is as simple as that. Walk to the store, suggest a walking meeting at work if possible, take a Sunday walk with a friend instead of meeting over lunch, get off the bus one stop before home, choose the stairs instead of the elevator. Nothing you probably haven’t heard before, but try it. It really works.

House chores
Cleaning your house or apartment can definitely get your pulse up. Vacuuming, mopping floors, scrubbing the shower, wipe dust, all of it requires movement. And why not add some music and dance around a little while doing it? Makes a boring chore more fun in an instant.

Make time
This is key people. Try to move at least 30 minutes every single day. Might sound a lot, but try to shift the focus of it being something you must do, to something you want to do. Maybe event write it in your day planner, make an appointment with yourself or with others.

Stay motivated
How, you might wonder? Try different things. We have a tendency to stick to what we know and what we are good at, but why not try out new things. Why not give dance class a try, or choose a new route for your Sunday walk? Or why not join your friend for a new activity?  Variation being the key word. And never underestimate the value of the small stuff. As long as you move, your body will thank you for it.

Bring others in on it
Have a family, why not play around in the snow or dance around the house? Have a partner? Why not motivate each other for a little sit up competition? Have co-workers? Why not suggest walking up and down the stairs together, twice a day during your workday? Live alone? Why not call a friend and suggest trying a new activity rather than a movie night?

Don´t limit yourself. Be open for new things and you will see how you will feel better and get more motivated to keep it up. But most importantly; don´t end up punishing yourself if the couch wins over your willpower. Just get up the next day and try again. And remember; start small.

How about a slow start?

In popular culture the term “slow” seems to have a pejorative connotation. Until Carl Honoré and the “slow life” movement started to create a following more than 10 years ago. So how about a slow start for 2018?

I’m a yoga teacher and for some reason people just assume I therefore do yoga every day, seven days a week. Last time I did yoga? December 17th 2017. Yeap, almost a month ago. Do I feel bad about it? Nope. Do I plan on changing this? Yes. But on my own terms. I’m taking it slow.

I am tired of the pressure of constantly delivering. I have stopped thinking that “fast and further” is the best and only way to go. I’m going slower and expanding my horizons instead.

The best tip I can give you is to actually take the time and watch Carl Honoré’s TED talk from 2005 (yes, it’s that old and more true than ever) because no one explains it better than he does. At first I didn’t even want to bother watching the whole thing. I mean, 19 minutes, I don’t have that kind of time! I’m a busy woman. Thankfully I was quick to realise the irony of the situation, so I sat there for 19 + minutes receiving my first life lesson of 2018.

Funny enough, just as he mentions, my vision of time has always been cyclic. I usually visualise the year as a wheel with my birthday always being at the bottom part (end of July) and New Year on top, on the opposite side. But lately, as I grew older, I came to see time more and more linear. A line that is going so fast ahead I can’t keep up with it. Almost like a have been forced on a very fast moving walkway when all I want to do is walk on the side of it.

During my Christmas break I spent five days in an old farm in the middle of no where, with no internet and no access to much more than my own thoughts. And I felt trapped. I felt like I was suffocating thinking of all the things I had to do, all that time I was wasting. Until I got to my sense and decided this was good for me. More than anything I needed to slow down. And with that, rethink my priorities. So bring it on 2018, I have a feeling you and I will have a great ride, but please, let’s take it slow.
