Insider tips: courage to start a new chapter

This month our four amazing coaches are giving you some pointers to make this year your best one, and third one up is Christine Nord. 

Christine is a Career Coach with a background in HR & recruitment. Her mission is to inspire and challenge people to find what a truly meaningful career is to them. Whether it’s about how to find meaning in your current job or find the courage to start a new chapter in your life. Here are her five steps to find more meaningful work in 2018:

Are you feeling stuck at work? Or maybe you feel like there should be something more meaningful for you out there? Don’t worry, you are not alone! A lot of people get frustrated from being unhappy at work and there is absolutely no reason to stay put in a job that doesn’t fulfill you.

Accept your feelings
First of all, try to accept your feelings – it’s quite normal and you’re not alone in feeling confused career wise! Most people do it sometime or several times during a lifetime and it’s rather healthy to stop and reflect on your current situation at work. So instead of trying to push these feelings away, welcome them and listen to what they have to say.

Identify your frustration
Has it gone so far that you feel frustrated and maybe even angry or bitter about your current job situation? Believe it or not, that’s great! It might not feel great, but this is what will help you do something about your situation. Make a list of all the things that is frustrating about your current job. Identify the aspects of your current career that does not feel aligned with, who you are and what you are ready to leave behind.

I encourage you to see your frustration as a gift.

Find out where your values ​​and strengths meet
Take some time to reflect on what values are important to you in your life and career. Maybe it’s not status and money that will give you a sense of meaning? Instead, start exploring what values ​​that do matter to you and what strengths you have. What skills and talents have you accumulated during your career so far? Even if you absolutely do not want to work with this anymore, you can safely pick up several of these experiences into a new profession. To do this you can start by asking friends or colleagues about how they perceive you, take online assessments or personality tests or you can start working with a mentor, coach or therapist to start discovering more about who you are and what is important to you.

Take action!
Don’t wait until you have the whole vision ready before you take the first step. A career change can take several months so it’s better to start right away than to wait until you know exactly what you want. Think about what could be your first step to take? For example, you can register for a course and learn something new, contact a friend who inspires you and invite them for lunch or maybe just read an inspiring article. Simply, what practical actions can you do today to get started? Expect to start a snowball effect just starting somewhere.

See your career as a lifelong experiment
In today’s society, we rarely choose one career and then stick to it until it’s time for retirement. You have the possibility to make a new career choice whenever you want! It’s also very common to find multiple and parallel careers, for example you can be both an accountant and a jewelry designer at the same time.

It’s really difficult to try to figure out what kind of career that suits you just by thinking about it, you have to go out and try it! Perhaps you don’t have to switch jobs right away but can find some way to test a new career while still at your current job. If you try to guide yourself by trying to feel as good as possible and find joy in what you do instead of trying to fit in or meet someone else’s expectations, you will have a much bigger chance at finding what a meaningful career means to you. So, go out there and try to look at your career in a more playful and experimental way than many of us do today!

Social traveling taken to a new level

When we came across Triple, a marketplace that connects curious travellers with passionate local hosts, it immediately sparked our interest. We sat down with one of the founders, Joakim Grönvall, to talk about the idea behind the company, good work culture and how wellbeing plays an important role in the way they run their business.

How was the idea of Triple born?
The idea behind Triple came from the problem that most people face today; feeling like a tourist when traveling. My co-founders and I are passionate travellers, and one thing we have in common and connect on, is that we all have had the best and most memorable travel experiences when we’ve been meeting locals and learning about their culture, been introduced to their favorite places etc.

How does it work?
Triple is a marketplace where passionate and outgoing individuals can organise their own activities, and earn money by acting as hosts in their hometowns; showcasing their personal and unique experiences ‘off the beaten path’. Hosts share their knowledge or craft, by connecting through the platform with travellers to give them a taste of the city they live in through the eyes of a local. Triple enables tourists to feel like locals when they travel, discover activities in various cities, rate hosts, and experience hassle free payments when booking, all through the platform. Triple is available in Stockholm, Barcelona, Paris and London.

Tell us about your team and your company’s core values!
We have an ambitious and talented team here at Triple HQ, and all of them embody our company core values, some of which include being authentically yourself and thinking big. The atmosphere we have, and aim to continue to foster, is openness and communication, and a strong team spirit.

What is a healthy work environment for you?
I think trust, empowerment and flexibility amongst colleagues is important for a healthy workplace, this way everyone is able to feel that they are putting their best effort into the work that they do, and there’s a good energy amongst the team that really helps us to grow together, rather than tearing us apart.

How much do you value wellness and well-being at work?
Wellness and wellbeing is a big part of people’s personal life, and it should be just as relevant in the workplace. Wellbeing to me isn’t just about being healthy physically, but mentally, and it’s important that both are supported and encouraged.

How do you encourage that as CEO?
The work environment is very important to me as people spend most of their days at the workplace. In Russia, where I was CEO at a company before moving back to Stockholm, we gave all our employees motorized desks so that they could alternate sitting and standing. Something that in Russia was such a good and interesting perk we even ended up on television showcasing our office. If someone needs to work from home one day to be with their sick child, or if one of the team wants to take a break due to a personal matter, we support, keep a good line of communication, and allow that type of flexibility. We also like for everyone working with us to visit the activities on our platform, so they can really engage first-hand with the product we work with. I often find that this leads to a happier and more committed employee who works even harder to achieve their work goals.

If you could implement something new to encourage a new routine to promote life balance and wellbeing within your team, what would it be?
My intention is that as we grow we will have the opportunity to help our team to stay healthy by giving them perks to help improve the work/life balance. Such initiatives could include e.g. paid for gym or yoga memberships or even paid for healthy food in the office. Giving people the options to become more effective is also something that I have close to heart. Working from home is such an initiative. This opportunity is something that has been shown in many case studies to improve the work/life balance, as well as employee loyalty and effectiveness.

What are the future plans for Triple?
We’re looking to expand into more cities in the next year, and hope to grow our activity offering, with the aim of really allowing more travellers to engage in the most memorable and unique local experiences when they travel.

Q&A with Elin Härkönen

Meet Elin, the positive and energetic girl behind BREAK IT and you will MAKE IT. A girl who has overcome more obstacles than many other her age, showing that giving up is not the answer. And that has become her motto.

Elin is a former athlete in gymnastic, having won several championship titles. But four years ago, she broke her neck after being kicked off a horse during practice. Against all odds, she fought her way back and just recently became the European Champion in OCR (Obstacle Course Racing). But then another accident occurred. Just a few weeks ago Elin was in Canada to compete when she was kicked in the chest by a horse, hospitalised with severe heart injuries.

But Elin is back, and she is so much more than just the girl behind the accidents. We got to meet her in Stockholm for a little Q&A about health, wellness and happiness.

What does health mean to you?
Health for me is about balance, and I truly believe finding a balance that works for you, your personality, goals and ambitions is the key to life. Because balance and health goes hand in hand. If we get too much or too little of something, our health will be affected negatively.

What inspires you?
People who follow their dreams. People who dare to be different and do what they believe in. People who never judge, who are curious and want to live their lives to the fullest. Cause that’s exactly what I am trying to inspire more people to do.

What is your favorite workout? 
Gymnastics on horses. I still miss the feeling of doing handstands on a running horse. But since I must choose something else I would say…. No I can’t choose..A little bit of everything; boxing, gymnastics, running, yoga.

Best part about your job?
I get to help people change their lives to the better. I get to help people overcome fears, do things they never thought they would be able to do.

What are your goals?
My goals and dreams are to make a difference. I want to help people improve their lives to the better. I want to share my knowledge, experiences, mindset and positive personality. Training and health are my passion, so continuing sharing my philosophy through my company BREAK IT MAKE IT. 

What motivates you?
My job, my clients, my friends, my family and of course all the challenges life is full of. I want to become the best version of myself, and that’s a life-long journey. “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. ”

Mindful morning session in Chicago

Visiting Chicago for a week, our very own yoga teacher, Mo, decided to team up with Del from Del’s Cooking Twist for a yoga & breakfast event.  

After interviewing Del last week about her life as a food blogger they concluded that by combining their two passions they could offer the perfect morning treat: 45 minutes hatha yoga followed by an all vegan breakfast, all in an intimate and cozy space with an amazing view over Chicago.

Del had prepared all vegan treats including: beetroot pesto toast with avocado, tahini toasts with sun-dried tomatoes, berry smoothies, granola cups and peanut butter cups with cashew and lime spread, raw energy balls, freshly squeezed orange juice and green detox tea from David’s Tea. It was absolutely delicious! You can find all the recipes and more inspiration on her blog and download her free e-book. 

It was a real pleasure to work with Del and welcome everyone, including fellow yoga teacher Stephanie. A great way to spend a sunny and bright morning in snowy Chicago.

A career twist

What started as a side project turned out to be a full time business for Del, the talented cook behind Del’s cooking twist. We had the pleasure of getting to know her a little better and talk about how she turned her hobby into a career.

First off, tell us a little about you!
I’m Del, a true food lover and the blogger behind Del’s cooking twist. I’m also a published author, recipe developer, food stylist and photographer. I grab a whisk as I would grab a pen, and the kitchen is of course my favorite room: I work, create and eat there, and I could even sleep there.

Looking at your blog you seem to be inspired by a lot of different places. Where are you from originally?
I’m French, but have spent several years in Sweden before I recently moved to Chicago. However, I feel that I belong to all the places I have lived in. When I’m asked where my heart is, I picture my kitchen at home. Wherever home is, I need my kitchen. And my laptop too. No food blogger can exist without a laptop.

Why did you decide on Chicago?
I moved to Chicago to follow my other half (yes, love!) but I already knew from early on that I at some point would move from Sweden to the US. So I developed my American twist alongside my Swedish and my French one. Chicago is an incredible city for a foodie, where various cuisines of the world co-exist and sometimes meet, to create fusion food.

We know where you are now and what you do, but how did you get here? What made you start a blog?
During my first year working in marketing I was extremely enthusiastic and my creativity bloomed. However, since I couldn’t implement all my ideas for the company, I decided to start my own food blog. That’s how Del’s cooking twist was born back in 2013. In the beginning, it was just for fun, and I didn’t have a clear idea of what blogging really meant. I started sharing my recipes randomly, once a week, taking pictures the way I thought looked good (with the artificial light of the kitchen above the dish). A lot has changed since then, and now, after nearly four years into this project I can say that the blog has been by far the best school I have ever attended. The rules of blogging are constantly evolving, so you need to be curious, proactive, and push your boundaries to explore new ways of working. It’s hard, challenging and very demanding, but also very fulfilling.

What did you study?
I went to La Sorbonne, a university in Paris, France, where I got a Master’s degree in International Affairs and European Studies. After that, I naturally moved abroad – to Sweden – and started working in the same field, within international public policies to be exact, at the French Embassy in Stockholm.

What made you change paths?
A combination of circumstances led me to stay in Sweden longer than I had originally expected (I fell in love with the country AND with the one who would later become my husband!). As my contract came to an end and my Swedish skills weren’t perfect yet, I broadened my field and looked for new opportunities. I ended up working within marketing for a food company (and later on in digital marketing) for a leading French brand. This is when I understood that my interest in food had always mattered to me and was more than just a hobby.

A question many of us with side projects have: When did you decide food was going to be a full-time job and not just a hobby anymore?
I was spending most of my free time blogging or thinking about new recipes I would develop. It was like an obsession – my brain was continuously creating new recipes. Also, professionally I was hungry for more and my job was clearly not fulfilling enough. I felt it was the right moment to give my blog a go and attempt to make a living of it. I loved the idea, but also felt somewhat unsure altogether. Was I being too daring? Also, my friends and family were skeptical: “Seriously? Is blogging really a job?!!”. I must admit I was overly sensitive to what others thought at that time. And even today it’s sometimes hard for me to say: “I’m a full-time food blogger, and yes it’s a real job”.

What or whom inspired you?
I was following other bloggers back then, some of whom had made their own passion into a full-time career. My first thought was that they were far better than I was and as such, it would be impossible for me to reach the same level etc., until I reconsidered and decided to strive for success, trying to find my own path within the blogging world.

How did you learn everything you know?
I am completely self-taught; my mom was not interested in cooking whatsoever. But I love eating and I have always been curious about food and tasting different cuisines which eventually inspired me to create new dishes. I read dozens of recipes daily, taste many others, and craft my own ones once.

Are you happy with your decision even though it was a scary one?
I’m a perfectionist, so I’m half happy with my decision because there is so much more I could develop. But the day only has 24 hours, so my wish for the future is that I could one day develop my business enough to hire someone to help me. (Well, Best of You can totally volunteer as bowl and spoon lickers)!

How does a day behind the scenes look like?
No day looks the same: my agenda is constantly in flux. I generally try to spend one or two days a week developing recipes in the kitchen, and spend the remaining days writing the recipes, developing the marketing aspects, and doing other food-related activities on the side, working as a food author or teaching cooking/baking classes.

What tips do you have for others who wish to follow their passion?
Your life begins the day you realise you only have one. Live your dream, and do not worry, great things take time.

One year anniversary

One year ago, we launched Best of You with a mission to inspire readers all over the world to focus on happiness and live a joyful life. Now, one year later we can’t believe how lucky we are.

Being able to write, share, collaborate and meet so many beautiful souls truly makes it all worth it. It’s so beautiful what people can create together and hearing someone tell their story, share their experience and let Best of You be a channel for that is truly amazing.

We want to thank our readers, you are without doubt our biggest motivators and nothing makes us happier than to hear that we inspired someone with our posts. We hope you will continue reading, sharing and giving us feedback.

The push I needed

Going through a burn out is like having a concrete door slammed in your face by the incredible Hulk, crushing your beliefs, hopes and self-esteem on the way. However, if you pay close attention, you will notice that the draft eventually opens numerous other doors you had no idea were there.

It took me two and a half years to be able to tell my story without shaking or tearing up. Maybe therapy would have been cheaper after all. But this journey was much more fun. Today I am thankful they pushed me to leave. Because in the end, they pushed me to live.

After my two first years in Stockholm my contract ended and since I refused to leave this great city, I found myself on the job market. After three restless months, I found the perfect job in a French company. A small team that would be like a family, loving and supporting, a nice central office to which I could walk or cycle, flexible timetables, French & Swedish bank holidays, good benefits, interesting tasks and responsibilities, an office job but with exciting projects. I was over the moon. And like everything else in life I cared for, I gave 100% to it. I worked my ass off, not only because I wanted to prove myself, not only because I feared to disappoint them or to fail, but mainly because I enjoyed my job. How lucky was I? I never said no, I never disagreed, hell, I never even really shared my opinion now that I think about it. Not at the beginning at least, and then it was too late. They had gotten used to me being available, reliable and quiet. But they did not reward that, they used it. Until worn thin.

Only after many months I started to understand things were wrong. No, it’s not ok for your boss to come in every morning, have a good look at you and grade your outfit on a scale from 0 to 20. No, it’s not ok for your boss not to be able to inform you of your budget for the year. No, it’s not ok for him to only do business with people he can get favors from… and that was just the top of the iceberg. There are so many components to that story I do not want to bore people with.  But basically, what had started as a great career opportunity slowly, but surely turned into a trap, a well I was falling into deeper and deeper with no way out. With my colleague, the only other sane human being in that office, we went from multi-tasking to survival mode.

This lasted for two very long years. And not only did it impact every cell of my being, it impacted my relationships with the outside world. I had lost so much: my energy, my positivity, my desire to improve, interest in what I was doing, my will to even try… and I didn’t leave that feeling at work, I took it home with me every night, burdening my partner with it, feeling helpless and misunderstood.

At that moment, when I sat at my desk and looked through the window down at the street four stories below as the only way out, I knew it had gone too far

It’s so hard to explain what went wrong. The primary definition of a burn out is to cease to function as a result of excessive heat or friction. That was it. I ceased to function as myself. When my colleague left to save her skin and sanity things took a turn for the worst. Of course, I was blaming myself. I have never ever been suicidal. Never. But at that moment, when I sat at my desk and looked through the window down at the street four stories below as the only way out, I knew it had gone too far, so I acted. Well, I spent a night on my sofa crying over the phone to my sister. The following weekend I heard the most beautiful words “you will never have to go back there again” coming out of a doctor’s mouth. It was over.

It was. Not completely though. I quickly realized I had lost more than a job. I had zero energy, no self-esteem, my confidence was completely shattered and even the early spring in beautiful Stockholm was not enough to make me stay. My partner and I had discussed going away for a while and this was the perfect timing to leave.

Since I had nothing left to give, I took a chance.

We ended up being away for more than two years. Two years during which I slowly relearned how to trust myself again, to trust others and to feel I was worth more than a 16 out of 20 for my outfit. I discovered my limits, mentally and physically and pushed them. I tried and did things I never thought I could do. Never thought I even wanted to do. I trekked to Everest Base Camp without a guide or a porter, I ran a (very long) half marathon in Bangkok, I waited tables, rediscovered to simply deal with people, and gain someone’s trust. I made friends again, I explored new interests, I learned to leave it all behind, I travelled until I got sick of it and then some more. I climbed Machu Picchu, I watched the sunrise over Taj Mahal in India and over Ankor’s temples in Cambodia, I discovered yoga on an island in Thailand, I took a cooking class in the Vietnamese countryside, witnessed political history in Myanmar, swam in gorgeous waterfalls in Laos, dived in Indonesia, lived off a van in New Zealand…

I did all this. But what is more important is what it did to me. I discovered a whole new world out there, and most importantly, within myself. I found answers to questions I did not even know I had.

To people who know me, I probably haven’t changed much. But to myself, I have. I have learnt what they do not teach you in school: there is not one path, one straight line. There is not one answer, but there is only one life. Try out, play hard, discover. You can be whoever you want to be, do whatever you want to do. Work hard, learn to say no, be kind, and be respectful, to yourself and others. Learn from everyone and everything. Look at what you have accomplished and realize how great you are. Leave behind the people who do not see that. And the most important rule of all: do not wear a watch waiting for the perfect timing; wear a compass, because you never know where the wind will take you.

Make every day an adventure

We quickly fall into everyday routines and let work or other chores take over our lives, while longing for the weekend or vacation. But what we really should do is create positive routines and find the small things in our everyday life that will bring us joy.

Follow these five, very simple steps and increase your overall quality of life.

Laugh
Yes, every single day! Not only is it FUN, but it also triggers healthy changes in your body, like strengthening your immune system, relives pain, makes you able to handle stressful situations and best of all; it gives you energy! And don’t forget that laughter is contagious, so don’t be scared to laugh out loud. The world needs more laughter and smiles anyways.

Quit what doesn’t add value to your life
Hate your job? Unhappy in your marriage or relationship? Have a friend that drains your energy? Then do something about it! If you’re unhappy you can either complain about or set out to make a change. Remember; it’s your life!

Read
Reading has so many health benefits, like mental stimulation, stress reduction, improves your memory and the list goes on. Some light reading before bedtime is always a good idea! Read more about the power of books here.

Connect with nature
Research shows that spending time outdoors, surrounded by nature increases energy in 90 percent of people. The smell of fresh flowers, grass and trees promote relaxation, lowers anxiety and gives you energy. And don’t forget the great health benefits of fresh air! It cleans the lungs and brings more oxygen to the cells and greater clarity to the brain.

Do at least one thing you love
Give someone a hug, kiss a loved one, write, draw, listen to music or dance! Whatever makes you happy, make sure to do it once a day. No matter how cliché it may sound, we only live once, let’s make the best of it.
